The Google Penguin Effect on SEO Content

The Google Pengin update is just further prrof that Google wants to reward high quality content and demote sites that employ SEO chicanery or even just “unnecessary manipulation.”  A quote from Google’s statement about the update is very telling.

“Sites affected by this change might not be easily recognizable as spamming without deep analysis or expertise, but the common thread is that these sites are doing much more than white hat SEO; we believe they are engaging in webspam tactics to manipulate search engine rankings.”

Notice the first part of the first sentence: “Sites affected by this change might not be easily recognizable as spamming without deep analysis or expertise,”

That means Google is investing in deep analysis and expertise to detect even subtlest forms of SEO manipulation it doesn’t approve of.

After a close look at the Update, here are a few tips I’ve come up with for SEO content developers.

Tip #1: MORE original content
Previously, content developeers often did some perfunctory tweaking of articles and posts, modifying first and last paragraphs, adding some different keywords and presented it as new content. Google is on to that. Best practice now is to create 100% original content every time.

Tip #2: More keyword variety
You still want to focus on a primary keyword in each piece of content. But now with even heavier use of LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing), Google is looking for secondary and tertiary level keyword phrases in articles and posts.

Tip #3: Easy on the anchor text links
Got one anchor text link (hypertext with your keyword phrase) in your article? That’s fine. But don’t add any more. Google now considers too many anchor text links as over-optimization.  If you want addtional links in the text  use something like “click here.”
